On September 6, students of an AICE Media Studies class were assigned the task of testing their knowledge of camera shots and angles through a project. We had to choose an inanimate object and develop a visual story using shots like an establishing shot, long shot, medium shot, close up, extreme close up, and even a point of view shot. When approaching this project, the first thing I struggled with was coming up with a story. After giving it some serious thought and doing some brainstorming, I made the decision to create a project about a pencil that traveled across the school in search of a sharpener.
I used all the shots in deliberate ways. I started with an establishing shot to establish the setting of the story. I used close up shots to show specific details. I also used medium shot to show viewers a character, their action, and the place all at the same time. Low angle shots were also used to demonstrate power. Overall, I believe that the reason I chose specific shots and the way they were executed were all great ideas, however, I wish I would've come up with a better storyline.
